Two years ago Journalist KATHLEEN KINGSBURY posted an article about “Pregnancy Boom at Gloucester High (school)” in Time magazine. 17 girls got pregnant and according to school officials it wasn't an accident. These girls according to the article and some internet resources come from middle class families. Here's the article:
Before I ask my questions regarding to this, I want you guys to think about what could have happen? Was is just ignorance? Were they trying to make some kind of statement? And if yes, what could it be?
I remember being in high school, thinking about going to Mizzou and working hard to get the job of my dream! But when I heard about this, it made me wonder why would anyone want to get pregnant on purpose when they are still babies? We hear about teen pregnancy and often hear about how they were not using contraceptives etc etc. But getting pregnant on purpose and above all making a pact to raise babies together is something to think about.

WOW! I agree it is so crazy that anyone would want to be pregnant! I did hear about this story when it was first published and right away I was given a "talk" from my parents. I believe that these girls and many that get pregnant on purpose do have a reason, they might not even know. I think that they are calling out for something/ looking for something. Although I believe that it is a good idea for schools to offer birth control I do not think these girls had any intention to use it.

I think a lot of teens try to act more grown up than what they are. They think they are a lot more mature and can handle more responsibility than what they can. I remember hearing about this situation. I think they tried to get attention, and that's what they got. However, attention doesnt last forever and raising a child is for years.

This issue has been on my mind lately, and I've considered writing my first post here about it. Anyone can turn on a daytime television talk-show and see younger teenagers and preteen saying they're absolutely desperate to get pregnant, so desperate that they claim to be having sex dozens of times a day. Usually, they're accompanied by grieving mothers looking for any way to get their daughter out of their dangerous mindset. In a typical sensationalist fashion the girls are shown the "error of their ways" by an army drill sergeant, or made to carry an electronic "baby" for several days. Most of the time they come back totally converted, and the audience is left with the feeling that they're back on the right path to stability.
ReplyDeleteBut how did they get there in the first place? I agree with Shelby in that it's probably a bid for attention. Feeling they're not getting enough love from their parents or elsewhere, they do something outrageous. n the case of the pregnancy pact, this choice to get pregnant can seem almost viral, spreading from girl to girl. Whatever the cause or outcome, I doubt it is a completely conscious decision.
