Facts and questions about abortion

According to abortiontv.com abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures in the US. In 2000, 1.31 million pregnancies were terminated by abortion in the US. What most people don't know is the short term and long term side effects of abortion. Here's the article that was posted on americanpregnancy.org which talks about the possible side affects of abortion.

http://www.americanpregnancy.org/unplannedpregnancy/possiblesideeffects.html

In one of the article we read in the class, the author mentioned about the option of abortion and how most teen mothers and even teen mothers' mothers want an abortion for their daughters. Do they know the possible side affects while considering this option? or do they just decide to "help" their daughters' future?

As a teenager I know most of them don't want to have a baby in their way but there are other options. Options like adoption. What might be preventing them?

  1. Unfortunately, statistics can only show us a certain kind of picture when it comes to the reality of abortion. I know that I too often fall into reading them as just a number, rather than a real story of a person faced with a difficult decision. We become easily desensitized toward the reality of the situation. After watching 16 and Pregnant (which I likely wouldn't have watched without the class) and reading this article and others, I definitely come away with a different picture of abortion than I would have otherwise.

Given the side-effects you've listed here, it makes that decision all the more difficult to make. I'm not sure that many girls are told the full biological effects an abortion results in, either because they don't have a personally-interested doctor or they don't know which questions to ask; to make an assumption, I'm not sure that many would or are able to do the full research on the procedure and its effects.

[I'm sorry for not doing the post this week (if I was supposed to). I was a little confused by the scheduling. I will take the first post after spring break.]

  2. I think part of the reason why teens choose abortion instead of adoption is because there are still many obstacles being pregnant that you have to face and is still costly for doctors appointments, prenatal vitamins, and etc. There is also the reputation that doesnt want to be harmed. That can be part of the reason that parents can have an influence. Looking at the difference between abortions between the US and Africa, Africa is right behind the US with 25% abortions and the US with 28%. There are 22 unsafe abortions for every 1000 abortions in Africa. Knowing that there are that many unsafe abortions, I feel like those individuals choose abortion for the same reasons that those teen mothers do in the US.

  3. I agree with everyone here kinda. I think teens choose abortion because they are scared and dont know what other options to choose, they think rashly. We can look at stasticts all we want but at the end of the day we have to relize that majority of them are false. I think being a teen and choosing to take part in a physical relationship teens also need to understand that if we do not protect ourselves it can happen... That being said i do believe that abortions cause many many negative outcomes in the future because of the emotions one must face when making that decision and have the procedure done.
