I don't think Hilary is going to make a blog, so I decided to go ahead and do one to make sure everyone gets their points! I hope you all don't mind! :)
I was doing research on what woman could do to have to support themselves and their children if they aren't married or the father figure isn't in the picture. I came across a documentary called "Grown in Detroit."

Detroit is becoming a run down city and you can find a lot of single mothers there who have a hard time financially. This video is about taking different vacant lots in Detroit and changing it into crops. The hope is for each of them to make 20,000 dollars a year by selling the crops they raise to help them become financially independent. I think this is an amazing idea, what do you guys think? Can you think of anything else like this that could help a large amount of single women be financially stable?

Hey Shelby,I think this video is really interesting. I cant say that it's a good idea to have young mothers selling crops but I sure think its a good step to help them to be independent. This idea may be used for older women but I think for teenagers we should help them to stay in school. One way could be providing a day care for babies whose moms are in school. Another way could be helping them to step in future by providing counseling or to help them to get a job. I think the main question is how we can or what technique we can use to help them and on what basis? Most of the single mothers come from different backgrounds and to provide a method that works for everybody is hard. So I don't think there is a method but I do think there are several ways we can help them.

Sorry for the delay, everyone, I spent quite a bit of time in line and hanging around the T/F booths. What a surprise it is to come back and see this movie trailer! It definitely seems to be a unique idea. I've never heard of anything like this happening before, and I'm really unsure of how economically viable it is for these girls to be living off of such a meager sum, must less earning it through farming. As the readings have shown, financial independence is extremely difficult for a teenage mother. The balancing act between motherhood and work can be hard for a mother; a teenager having to handle so much responsibility is even more troublesome. Without education, manual labor is often the only option for these girls. Being pregnant, or just getting over a pregnancy, it can also be very dangerous. Desperate times call for desperate measures, I guess. But is it really the only option?
