Recently I came across this news that teen pregnancy is going down and MTV is the reason for it. I wanted to search more about it and see if its really true.
Before I get into more details, I want to ask you guys something that I observed while watching teen moms and 16 & pregnant. I wondered how much information about their personal life is correct? to what extent does MTV play role in portraying it? And the impact it has on their family members and friends?
I feel like with 16 & pregnant and teen moms, MTV is saying that it is okay to be pregnant when you are a teenager. This video is giving more information on it.

We could say that MTV is helping to portray the hard life teenage moms get after having a baby, to an extent. But it is also giving the wrong message. I feel like there are some teenagers out there who would try to get pregnant just to get a fame, like the ones described in this video. What could MTV say about that? How much truth could we get from MTV and teen moms?

I also have observed this while watching the shows. I think when MTV started the show it was to show their daily struggles as teenage parents and to help prevent pregnancy. I think just like any "reality" show you always have people who are wanting to be on one. Obviously, these two shows require you to have a baby. I think there are individuals who want the fame, there's others who might want the fame but also might think it will mend their relationship with the fathers of the baby, and then you have the teens who have unplanned pregnancies. As we discussed in class it comes down to choices that are made and the risks that come along with having sex and the possibility of parenting.

ReplyDeleteI have heard about teens trying to have a baby to make money off the show. I dont know how much of that is correct though. I think MTV wants to show as much as the teen moms individuality as they can but they are making a show for entertainment so the pick and choose what actually goes on air. This show started out with the message that being a teen mom is not easy. I feel like it can be taken many way because these girls are making a lot of money off this show. I think there is a lot we do not know about these moms so it is unfair to judge them. I can see where people could get the idea that MTV could be promoting teen motherhood... but I really think they have/had good intentions to show the "true life".
